A Web architecture has many actual clients and servers. The basic definition of a client is a piece of software that requires the assistance of another piece of software to complete its appointed task. A server is a piece of software that provides this assistance. These two pieces of software are often located on different computers, but that is not a requirement. In the Web world, the presentation layer is always broken into two parts. The first part is local to the Web site. The second part is on the user's computer. Client/server does have a more accurate definition in the computer world, as already pointed out, but in the Web world, when a developer talks about the client and server, it is this division of the presentation layer to which he is most likely referring. Here, the client is the user's computer and the server is the Web site. Like any client/server architecture, bidirectional communication must be available between the client and server. In the case of Web clients and servers, this communication is always done by way of a TCP/IP network using HTTP. What Is Client Side To use the Internet, a user needs a computer, any operating system (O/S), Internet access, and any Web browser. Believe it or not, this is everything that makes up the client side of a Web site (see Figure 5-3). (Unless, of course, the site you are accessing is using Java applets; then you would need the Java Runtime Environment, or JRE, as well. If the site uses ActiveX components, the O/S needs to be Microsoft based.)

Windows provides a tool called the Management Console that allows you to control certain administrative functions through a GUI. It is handy for performing repetitive commands fairly easily and quickly. In the console, you as the user can create and add stand-alone console addins, also known as snap-ins. Oracle takes advantage of the tool and provides a snap-in for managing Oracle Databases. However, it is not installed by default. While installing Oracle Database software, choose a custom installation rather than an express one, and explicitly choose the Management Console for Oracle. After the database is installed, you can configure this Management Console plug-in. Follow these steps to configure the Management Console for Oracle: 1. Click Start Run, enter mmc in the Run window, and press Enter. 2. This action opens the Management Console, similar to the window shown in Figure 21-13. Select File Add/Remove Snap-In.

It should not matter whether you are a Mac, Microsoft, UNIX, or mainframe user as long as your machine has the core requirement of a Web browser. Unfortunately, it does matter what platform or browser is used because each platform supports its own implementation of a browser and each browser is slightly different.

The built-in SQL function DUMP(expr [, format [, position [, length]]]) may be used to display the data type code of a column along with the internal representation of the column s value. The first argument to DUMP is the format for displaying the internal representation. The formats supported are octal (format=8), decimal (default or format=10), hexadecimal (format=16), and individual single-byte characters (format=17). Information on the character set is included, if 1000 is added to one of the three aforementioned format settings (format=format+1000). When position and length are omitted, the entire internal representation is returned. Otherwise, merely the portion starting at offset position having length bytes is considered.
